About

The #dev-ersity in academia (#DIA) is an initiative started by two underrepresented researchers from India. It is established as a result of a lack of awareness around the subject in developing and underdeveloped countries. We are certain that there is a dire need to aid global Developmental Psychology and allied sciences enthusiasts; especially those from under-represented nations, to settle the turmoil they undergo during their various levels of careers and education and pursue their best interests — just like how individuals from the traditional fields, including clinical psychology exercise it.

We hope through this #DIA initiative can be the face for inclusive events in academia and help the marginalised populations to truly be themselves in the academic space, especially through acceptance and acknowledgment of their valuable contributions towards psychological science.

Objectives

  1. It aims to provide a space for researchers around the globe, especially the underrepresented population that conducts research in developmental psychology and interdisciplinary subjects like cognitive science, AI, linguistics.
  2. It seeks to promote open science through different events like journal club presentations of not only one’s work but also enable and encourage publications from the non-WEIRD population to be discussed and represented.
  3. It strives to create a space for training young minds to confidently carry out and communicate their research and ideas through free-of-cost events through training, expert sessions, and presentation events especially focusing on students/trainees from developing nations.
  4. It aims to highlight diverse topics related to developmental psychology/cognitive science and allied sciences by also inviting scientists from countries that don’t get represented.

Diversity and Inclusivity Statement

The #DIA embraces diversity, equality and inclusivity. The founders of the journal club are from the underrepresented population and take the DEI initiative very seriously. One of our co-founders, Nikita Ghodke, is a queer disabled researcher in academia and believes in representation, especially in STEM. We believe in open science, transparency and hence would make all the materials of the sessions available for public view with consent. Our priority is also to make all the information and sessions accessible by making sure the transcripts of the sessions are made available for everyone. We believe in giving equal opportunities to everyone in the field irrespective of one’s colour, race, caste, religion, gender, disabilities.
